Embodied Expressive Writing

Embodied Expressive Writing is an opportunity to connect with your authentic and creative self in the moment, through writing from embodied presence, in the company of a supportive circle that reflects and amplifies your own potency.

We begin with conscious movement with music. Some might think of this as dance, but any movement that calls our attention inward to experiencing our own bodies spontaneously in the moment is welcome. A couple of gentle invitations toward specific movement inquiries are offered as a way to stay curious about what arises and to encourage ourselves to return home to our bodies.

From that embodied place, we then write in response to an invitational prompt. The words that arise when we write from an embodied place are often different than our habitual writing patterns, and reveal more to ourselves about our deepest being. We may write about a personal memory, or poetry, or fiction, or poetical fictional memories, or musings that make sense only to ourselves. We write what wants to be spoken and heard in this moment.

We then share our writing, if we choose, with the circle, to release our words into voiced existence, and we hear back echoes of what has resonated in ripples throughout the circle. We create together what Julia Cameron calls “a believing mirror”: “a believing mirror is a friend to your creativity… we can consciously build a Sacred Circle of believing mirrors to potentiate each other's growth, to mirror a ‘yes’ to each other's creativity.” All this is in service to embodying and cultivating presence and being open to greater aliveness, creativity and connection.

This is not a "how to" course designed to improve your writing. There is no instruction on writing as craft, critical or constructive feedback aimed at revision, or advice about how to get published. You may, however, discover that this approach to writing gets your creative juices flowing and makes you want to write more, which may energize other writing projects you have.

No previous moving or writing experience necessary.
